Condé Nast Traveller June 2012From the Editor "Summertime, and the livin’ is easy..." George Gershwin’s lyrics burst from the heart as the thermometer rises. Summer travelling is so much easier for the footloose and fancy-free – just throw beachwear, sandals and light clothing into a case and away you go! Airlines increase their seats on offer, some countries now relax visa controls for Russian holidaymakers. Friends’ generosity – “we have a whole villa/yacht/hotel floor... come and join us!” is just too tempting. The choices have never been so good – from former Soviet Republics to the Far East, from Northern Europe to South Africa – bargains are profuse... “book three nights, get three free!” Summer is for spontaneity – “let’s go to Greece with a stop-over in Turkey” – and unexpected discoveries, even finding golf playable! Those are the child-free options. Taking children is a whole different operation – planning is done well in advance, rooms booked early, coastlines studied for safe locations, attractions to absorb their interest are located. Holidays with the kids are perfect quality time. Fishing in rock-pools, beach-combing, casting messages in bottles out to sea. And at the end of a perfect day, sing them to sleep with a Gershwin lullaby... “Summertime, and the livin’ is easy...”
